Clear the clutter
Over the years we all pick up items here and there that begin to accumulate, and before you know it, they've taken over the house! The best thing that you can do for your home decor is to clear the "clutter." Evaluate each room, looking for items that are no longer used, or have fallen into disrepair. Removing these pieces will free up space to fill with things that can be useful, or something new and pretty that simply makes you feel good. If you cannot part with something but don't really need it out, pack it away for a while. If you miss it, bring it back out at a later date and it will feel brand new again. If you don't miss it, then you know it can go.Display your collections
If you have a favorite animal, character, or hobby that everyone buys you knick-knacks to match, that doesn't necessarily have to be considered clutter. If it's something that you really love, make it a focal point instead. Group the items together on a shelf or table and you have instead decor plus a conversation piece. Maybe you have collected certain decorating items over the years; candlesticks, spice canisters, picture frames, etc... Do the same with these. Fill all of the frames and put them in a grouping together. If you don't have enough photos that you want to display, put a pretty design in a few of them. Do you have a drawer full of colorful potholders in the kitchen? Display them on the wall. They'll decorate the room and always be out and ready for use.Update one room
One room doesn't sound too overwhelming. You can even choose the smallest room in the house. It doesn't have to be a full makeover with paint and new furniture. Change the accent color in the room to a new one, or add a few pops of color if the room was missing that. Add a new shower curtain to a bathroom or choose new place mats and napkins for the dining room. Add a new piece of art to the wall and choose things to fill the room that go along with it. Small changes can make a huge difference in both the look and feel that a room has. Once you see how easily an update can be, maybe you will want to go from only one room to one room each month!Decorate for you first, company second
Everyone wants the house to look nice when company comes over, but those people are only there occasionally. You have to be there every single day. With this in mind, when you decide which room to update, start with one that you use the most yourself. You most likely spend a lot of time in your own bedroom and bathroom. Maybe it's the family room. Updating the home decor where you spend the majority of your time means you will see it more often and it will inspire you to do the same in other rooms later on. Pick out some beautiful candles or pretty soaps to place around your bathtub. Inspirational sayings on the walls are a wonderful motivator too. Decorate for your own enjoyment and others are bound to love it too.Make accent pieces seasonal
Holiday decorations are fun and exciting because they change up the look of the home from it's everyday norm. You don't have to wait for a holiday to do this. Treat the four seasons like a holiday. Changing out picture frames, scented candles, throw pillows, flower arrangements, and even wall art to match the current season keeps the look from getting dull.
