Fragrant Thursday Features the Tyler Company Every Week

Proper Techniques to Care for Your Jewelry

Good & Perfect Gifts in Eldon has a large, beautiful, diverse selection of fabulous jewelry. We believe that you can never have too many pieces of jewelry. Our selection features some of the most spectacular jewelry at the Lake of the Ozarks.

The fact that most jewelry is timeless and can fit into any era, you want to take good care of the pieces that you own so that they last for a long time. Proper care, cleaning, and storage is the way to do this. The following tips will help to keep your favorite pieces around for years of wear.

CARE

Always apply makeup, lotion, perfume, hairspray, etc. before you put jewelry on.
When removing jewelry, get in the habit of wiping it with a soft cloth to remove any oils or perspiration from your skin.
Avoid wearing your nicest jewelry when doing any type of physical work like housekeeping or gardening. Wear gloves to protect your rings from dirt and scratches.
Do not expose jewelry to household cleaners.
Do not expose jewelry to chlorine in swimming pools and hot tubs.

CLEANING

A very soft brush (like a makeup brush), water, and mild dish soap (no detergents) are simple yet excellent tools for keeping your jewelry clean.
Only clean your jewelry in an area where it will not fall. Avoid the edge of a sink, because you could lose pieces down the drain.
Rinse jewelry in a glass of water rather than running water, and remove by hand, do not dump it out.
Ultrasonic cleaners can be purchased, but find out the specific cleaning requirements for each piece of jewelry before using one of these on it. Some gems can be shaken loose or damaged.
If you are unsure of the type of care a particular piece of jewelry requires, have it professionally cleaned by a jeweler.

STORAGE

Each piece should be stored individually to avoid scratches.
A fabric lined box works wonderfully for storage.
Light and heat can affect the color and durability of colored gemstones. Keep all jewelry in a dry place away from direct light.
When traveling, do not throw all of your jewelry into one bag. Pieces can scratch each other. If you do not have a fabric case for travel, wrap each piece individually in tissue paper.

All of these tips are fairly simple to follow for your special occasion jewelry, but the pieces that you wear on a daily basis may occasionally have to face the elements. Remember to keep your daily lifestyle, routine, and activities in mind when choosing jewelry for everyday wear.

Boost Your Home's Curb Appeal with Outdoor Decor

As we mentioned last week in our indoor decorating blog "Show Your Personality With Your Home Decor," April is National Decorating Month. This week our Lake of the Ozarks gift shop would like to share a few wonderful ideas for decorating the outside of your home. It's the first impression that you make when guests visit your house, and Good & Perfect Gifts has some tips for making that impression an impressive one.

Small Additions

Small items added to the front of your home can make a huge difference. Good & Perfect Gifts carries some lovely flags for the outside of your home, as well as the poles to hang them from. Choose one that is welcoming, and feel free to change it with every season to keep things interesting.

We also have marvelous initial door hangers to personalize your front door with. Another excellent decoration for the front door is a seasonal wreath featuring a theme or beautiful florals. Dried or artificial arrangements look great and last all season long.

Colorful Flowers

April also happens to be National Garden Month, so that is a wonderful incentive to add a few real flowers to boost your curb appeal too. If you are ready to put some hard work into it, plant flowers along either side of a front walkway.

A quicker and simpler way to add live flowers is to put a few beautiful blooms in pots. Two large matching potted plants on either side of the front door is a great visual. Window boxes look beautiful, as do wall hangers that hold plants. You can even add a small shelf to the outside of your home to place some pots of flowers on.

An Outdoor Room

If your home has a covered front porch, you have plenty of space to add lots of fun decor. As long as the pieces that you use are weather-resistant or blocked from harmful elements like rain and bright sunlight, you can decorate a welcoming conversation area similar to an indoor room. Artwork can be placed on a back wall, and curtains can be hung to block or filter the sun at certain times of day.

Once you get the main furniture in place, like a bench or wicker chairs and a patio table, dress it up a bit. Add a pop of color here and there with throw pillows. Jar candles with lids are perfect, because the lid will keep out any rain while the candle is not in use, and if you choose a scent that bugs don't like, it will keep them away from your relaxing area.

Show Your Personality With Your Home Decor

April is National Decorating Month. It's perfect timing, because once you get through spring cleaning your home, you will probably notice a few areas where you could make updates. If you are looking for new home decor items at the Lake of the Ozarks, our gift shop is filled with wonderful choices.

Good & Perfect Gifts in Eldon offers a wide variety of items to add beauty and interest to your home. People may tell you that there are rules to home decorating that you must follow, but the only rule we believe in is that you need to decorate a room to make yourself happy. Every other "rule" is simply a guideline that you may follow for help if you choose.

Start with this in mind...

First of all, you will need to begin with functional pieces like seating, lamps, and tables. Everything else that you add is meant to set a mood and bring your personality to the room. Start with your favorite color or an item that you love and find inspiring. Everything else will begin taking shape from there.

Pick your key pieces.

This will be your furniture. Scale is very important, so always keep the size of the room in mind when you are shopping. A great big sectional couch in a tiny room leaves no space for anything else, and a huge room with only a few single chairs placed around it will seem like it's missing something. Taking a few measurements before shopping will help a lot.

Decorate the open surfaces.

Every coffee table, bookshelf, or other surface in a room is an opportunity to set a scene or tell a story. Grouping something that you collect in one area is a great way to showcase your favorite things in a decorative way. A cute plaque with a funny saying about a hobby of yours brings whimsy to a room. These surfaces are also the perfect place to fill with picture frames highlighting the memories and people in your life.

That being said, you don't have to cover every single surface. Too many things in a room can make it look cluttered. Keep it simple, and if you can't find space for everything that you would like to show off, change the display occasionally. Switch out your home decor items with the season or once a month.

Add pops of color and texture.

For a room with a neutral color palette, a splash of color here and there brings with it interest and personality. Placing colorful candles around the room is excellent for this. If your room is already full of bright color, ground it with accents of black or white. Feel free to play with different patterns and textures too. Everything in a room doesn't have to match perfectly, but the items should all complement each other.

Don't forget the walls.

Once you have all of the furniture in place and your tables and shelves decorated, move on to the the biggest flat surface in the room - the walls. This can sometimes be scary for people because you hate putting a hole in the wall if you aren't 100% sure that it's the right spot. It won't happen overnight.

You will need to have a little patience while waiting for your perfect room to emerge. Slowly building a look you love means that you are less likely to change your mind dramatically down the road. Decorate with things that you truly love and you can't go wrong. And if you do, don't worry, none of it is permanent. Any time you feel like changing things up, go for it.
