Shop Local! It's Independent Retailer Month

The month of July is also known as Independent Retailer Month, and our gift shop at the Lake of the Ozarks happens to fall into that category. There are many benefits when you "Shop Local" at small businesses in your town, not only for the store, but also for the community in which you live. Good & Perfect Gifts pulled together a little information about this month to share with you.

How It All Began
Independent Retailer Month is celebrated each July across the United States. While consumers are encouraged to shop locally all year long, this month highlights it. The first time that something like this happened was in 2003 when Tom Shay, principal of Profits Plus, created "National Independent Retailer Week." A few years later in 2009, Kerry Bannigan, co-founder of Nolcha Shows, did a similar type of week to encourage people to buy from independent fashion retailers. Her event was city-wide in New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and New Jersey and was featured on many national television networks.

In 2011, Shay and Bannigan came together and began discussing an idea that would include all types of businesses. "Independent Retailer Month USA" was born that July, 2011, with the goal of becoming a global campaign. It expanded to the United Kingdom too, and in 2012, Canada jumped on board.

Why You Should Shop Local
Shopping at small, independent retailers in your city or town has a very positive impact on both the social and economic development of a community. Some of the benefits that come with it are:

Personal Touch
"Big box" stores may offer the convenience of having nearly everything in one place, but they are so large they often lack that special, personal touch you get at an independent retailer. There are numerous people on staff at the larger chains, you may never see the same person twice, and often they only know a little bit about one specific area of the store.

The Joy of a Candle Without the Flame! Our Tyler Mixer Melts

Every week we host "Fragrant Thursday" at Good & Perfect Gifts in Eldon, starring the Tyler Candle Company. They not only have amazing scented candles to offer, but they also produce many other items that make your house smell incredible. One of those items in particular that we love here at our Lake of the Ozarks gift shop is the Mixer Melts.

What is a Mixer Melt?
Tyler's glamorous Mixer Melts are scented squares of wax that give a room the wonderful smell of a burning candle without having to light a flame. The Mixer Melts are placed into a Fragrance Warmer. The warmer is plugged in for a heat source, and as the surface warms up, the Mixer Melt releases whatever fabulous scent that you have chosen to put into it.

Wide Variety of Amazing Scents
The Tyler Candle Company uses a high grade of fragrance allowing the different scents to combine easily with each other. Mixer melts can be used alone, or you can "mix it up" by combining 2 or more different scents. Extremely creative Tyler fans have even been known to mix up to 6 fragrances together! Not only do these Mixer Melts smell unbelievable, but they allow you to have a little fun coming up with your very own uniquely blended fragrances.

Men often assume that our Lake of the Ozarks gift shop is a place where only women go to shop. That is most definitely NOT the case! Good & Perfect Gifts in Eldon has many great items inside that any man would love. We've highlighted a few of them in today's blog, but you really should visit us soon and see for yourself!

Many of our home decor items feature very manly hobbies (although some women enjoy these too!) You will find wonderful things on our many shelves depicting hunting, fishing, the military, and more. 5 Tips For Best Utilizing Scented Candles

Consider the size of the room.
