Boost Your Home's Curb Appeal with Outdoor Decor

As we mentioned last week in our indoor decorating blog "Show Your Personality With Your Home Decor," April is National Decorating Month. This week our Lake of the Ozarks gift shop would like to share a few wonderful ideas for decorating the outside of your home. It's the first impression that you make when guests visit your house, and Good & Perfect Gifts has some tips for making that impression an impressive one.

Small Additions

Small items added to the front of your home can make a huge difference. Good & Perfect Gifts carries some lovely flags for the outside of your home, as well as the poles to hang them from. Choose one that is welcoming, and feel free to change it with every season to keep things interesting.

Show Your Personality With Your Home Decor

April is National Decorating Month. It's perfect timing, because once you get through spring cleaning your home, you will probably notice a few areas where you could make updates. If you are looking for new home decor items at the Lake of the Ozarks, our gift shop is filled with wonderful choices.

People may tell you that there are rules to home decorating that you must follow, but the only rule we believe in is that you need to decorate a room to make yourself happy. Every other "rule" is simply a guideline that you may follow for help if you choose.

Start with this in mind...

First of all, you will need to begin with functional pieces like seating, lamps, and tables. Everything else that you add is meant to set a mood and bring your personality to the room. Start with your favorite color or an item that you love and find inspiring. Everything else will begin taking shape from there.

Pick your key pieces.

This will be your furniture. Scale is very important, so always keep the size of the room in mind when you are shopping. Every coffee table, bookshelf, or other surface in a room is an opportunity to set a scene or tell a story. Grouping something that you collect in one area is a great way to showcase your favorite things in a decorative way. A cute plaque with a funny saying about a hobby of yours brings whimsy to a room. These surfaces are also the perfect place to fill with picture frames highlighting the memories and people in your life.

That being said, you don't have to cover every single surface. Too many things in a room can make it look cluttered. Keep it simple, and if you can't find space for everything that you would like to show off, change the display occasionally. Switch out your home decor items with the season or once a month.

Add pops of color and texture.

For a room with a neutral color palette, a splash of color here and there brings with it interest and personality. Placing colorful candles around the room is excellent for this. If your room is already full of bright color, ground it with accents of black or white. Feel free to play with different patterns and textures too. Everything in a room doesn't have to match perfectly, but the items should all complement each other.

Don't forget the walls.

Once you have all of the furniture in place and your tables and shelves decorated, move on to the the biggest flat surface in the room - the walls. This can sometimes be scary for people because you hate putting a hole in the wall if you aren't 100% sure that it's the right spot. It won't happen overnight.

You will need to have a little patience while waiting for your perfect room to emerge. Slowly building a look you love means that you are less likely to change your mind dramatically down the road. 7 Design Styles Explained. What Is Yours?

When it comes to decorating your home, even if you don't realize it, you probably have a design style. Gathering items that you like and enjoy being surrounded by comes naturally. Once these are all put together, a design style is most likely present.

Coastal

This design style is usually inspired by the ocean, but the visitors to our Lake of the Ozarks gift shop are more often inspired by the gorgeous lake located a few miles away from us. Rustic/Country

Lots of natural elements and textures are present in a country-inspired room: wood, stone, and burlap to name a few. Decor can include items that would be found on a farm. Furniture is often antique, and many items are handmade. Lace softens the look for a more elegant feel, and incorporating plaids and worn leather can give it more of a western design.

Shabby Chic

This look has a charming elegance about it, while at the same time feeling very lived-in and antique. Vintage accessories that you would find in a flea market decorate the room. Furniture pieces are often painted wood with bits of color worn off to expose the wood underneath. Accents are generally light in color, and the entire room has the feel as if everything has been artistically collected.

Contemporary

Clean, sleek lines and solid colors are present in this design style. Neutral colors will be used throughout the furniture, and possibly "pops" of bolder colors throughout the accessories. Furniture will have sleek lines and basic shapes, and clutter will be nowhere in sight.

Eclectic

This title describes a design style that may, at first glance, appear like a lot of different styles have been thrown together randomly. If done correctly, even though the decor looks random, pieces have been placed so that they work cohesively together. Entering a room like this gives a person a sense of imagination and free expression. Many colorful pieces will be placed around the room in varying patterns and fabrics.

How to Beautifully Hang Artwork

The best gift shop at the Lake of the Ozarks offers many beautiful pieces of art among our wonderful store selections. You will find them all over our walls in many different styles, designs, and colors. Good & Perfect Gifts tries to carry a little something for every possible taste. Picking out a piece or two that you like is fairly easy, but figuring out where to put it on the wall once you get home can be intimidating.

There are a few tips and tricks that will help you to hang your art on the wall the way the pros would do it. These are some general guidelines to keep in mind so that it looks it best.

Eye Level

Art is best appreciated when it is hung at eye level. We know, not everyone is the same height, but there is a general area that is most widely accepted. The center of the picture or painting that you are hanging should hit right about 58" above the floor. Most artwork is hung by a wire on the back. There is a formula that may sound confusing to read, but is actually very simple to follow. You will want to measure the height of your art, divide that by 2 to find the center, then subtract the inches between the top of the painting and the wire from that half. Here it is broken down and much easier to understand.

1. Measure the height of the artwork. Let's say it is 30" tall.

2. Divide 30 by 2, which is 15. This is the center of the art.

3. Measure the distance between the top of the painting and the taut hanging wire. Let's say that distance is 3".

4. Subtract the 3" from the 15", and this is the point where you will put your nail above the 58" mark on the wall.

30" divided by 2 = 15"

15" minus 3" = 12"

Place the nail 12" above the 58" mark on the wall, or at 70" above the floor.

Groupings of artwork

Hanging a group of different pieces of art together on a wall can be done in a similar way. Think of the entire grouping as one big piece of art, and center this grouping just as you would a single piece, with the center hanging at eye level. It is suggested that you leave about 2"-3" of space between each piece.

Above a sofa

If you have decided to hang your artwork above a sofa, aim for it to be about 6"-8" above the back of the sofa. This is a good height for viewing and you shouldn't accidentally bump it as you get up off of the couch.

Scale of the room

While you are choosing the pieces that you want to display in your home, consider the scale of the room that you will be putting it into. A great big empty wall will look silly with one tiny piece of art in the center of it, just as a giant piece of art can overpower a small room. If you will be hanging artwork in a young child's room, consider lowering the "eye level" a bit to match their smaller body.
